Question from

Calling all chefs, cooks and amateur designers. This is not strictly a food question, more a kitchen conundrum. We are about to update our kitchen. We have had many wildly varied quotes - do you believe it's worth spending money on a kitchen and is there anything you can suggest that we should factor into our plan?

Ah, Loon. For my money, the kitchen is the most important room in the house. It needs to be comfortable (try to incorporate somewhere cosy to sit); it needs to be sociable - a place where you can see your guests while you cook. It needs, above all, to be practical, which is why kitchen designers employ the Golden Triangle method - measuring the distance between fridge, sink and stove, and trying to keep it to a minimum.
I wouldn't bother with an "island" (very 90s) or breakfast bar (80s). Go for a big farmhouse table, and a non-fitted kitchen which you can change around if you fancy it.
If you love coffee, it's worth having a Gaggia in your plan; ditto a wine cooler if you're into white wine. A friend of mine swears by a laundry chute. You must have easy access to recycling bins/compost bucket. Remember that you can get away with cheaper cupboards if you lavish money on your work tops. And do get a bigger fridge than you think you'll need - it will always be too small, guaranteed!
